JAMMU, Jan 27: Dr Yograj Sharma from Rehari Jammu is one of the Padamshree awardees for this year, announced by the Government of India on the eve of Republic Day.
Selected for this prestigious civilian award for his contribution in the field of Medicine, Dr Sharma is presently the Chief of Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi since March, 2014, Professor and Consultant- Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon and also Advisor (Ophthalmology) Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MH&FW), New Delhi and Director, World Health Organization (WHO) SEA Centre for Ophthalmology.
He is the Chairman of the Task Force on Prevention and Control of Diabetic Retinopathy Group and Co-Chairman of the National Task Force on Prevention of Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) setup by MH&FW, Government of India.
He did his MBBS (Hons) from University of Calcutta in 1974, MD M.S. (Merit of First order) from PGI.M.E.R., Chandigarh in 1978 and ECFMG from USA, in1979.
Prof Sharma has vast experience in the field of Teaching the MBBS, MD (Ophthalmology) and Vitreo-Retina Fellows, at Dr R P Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi. Besides 11 books, he has around one thousand publication to his credit in the national and international journals.
Dr Yograj Sharma had restored vision of a CRPF Jawan attacked in Dantewada Naxalite massacre after primary repair was undertaken by Dr Tushar Aggarwal. This young man with wife and two small children had both eyes totally mutilated. One eye was salvaged with good vision after four VR Surgeries.
