Avalanche warning issued in Kashmir

SRINAGAR:
With Kashmir Valley experiencing the first heavy snowfall of the winter, authorities today issued a high danger avalanche warning for prone areas in Bandipora district and medium danger warning for seven other districts.
“As per the communication received from Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, high danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas in Bandipora district and medium danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas in Kargil, Baramulla, Kupwara, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Ganderbal districts,” an official spokesman said.
He said the deputy commissioners of Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Pulwama, Ganderbal, Kargil districts have been asked to issue weather advisory to people asking them not to venture out of their homes during the next 24 hours.
People have been advised to keep cleaning the snow deposition from rooftops of their houses and bunkers to avoid damages, he said.
The officers concerned have been asked to inform people to temporarily evacuate the locations under fall line of avalanche and heavy snowfall, he said.
The spokesman said necessary instructions have been issued to senior officials at district level to activate manpower and machinery and be in a State of preparedness, so as to minimise disruption of essential services, including road connectivity, health services.
High altitude areas of the Valley received heavy snowfall over the past three days while the plains including Srinagar experienced moderate snowfall during the period. (AGENCIES)
