JAMMU, Feb 6: Junior Doctors of Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu today called off their strike following the intervention of District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu and resumed their duties.
The decision to call off the strike was taken after a meeting of representatives of Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) with DC Jammu, Deputy Superintendent, GMCH, HoDs of various departments of the hospital besides senior officers of police. The meeting was held at about 2 pm in Committee Room of hospital.
During the meeting, representatives of RDA including Dr Neeraj Sharma, president, Dr Romil Sharma, organizing secretary and Dr Akhil Gupta, joint secretary, put up their genuine demands including restriction of two attendants with one patient and proper security arrangements in Emergency section, which according to Principal, GMCH, Dr Ghansham Dev, were already accepted.
However, the RDA representatives refused to call off the strike unless formal orders are issued in this regard. As soon as formal orders were issued after the meeting, RDA president along with others held a press conference at 5 pm this evening and called off the strike.
The strike had severely impacted the healthcare delivery services in the hospital particularly in Emergency section. Though the senior doctors were making all efforts to ease rush of patients by overworking, yet the consequences of the strike were clearly visible in the form of huge rush of patients in Emergency Section as well as OPDs.
Junior Doctors of the hospital under the banner of RDA had gone on strike following manhandling of a female junior doctor by the attendants of a patient in emergency section on Tuesday night. They were demanding security beef-up in the hospital premises particularly in emergency section, lodging of FIR against the attendants involved in the assault, the restriction of two attendants with one patient in Emergency, reasonable representation to the concerned higher ups by the Principal for making assault on hospital staff or damage to hospital property a non-bailable offence and swift action for lodging FIR (within 1 hour) if any such untoward incident occurred in future.
