SRINAGAR, Feb 8: The hills of Kashmir valley experienced fresh snowfall today while plains of the Valley were lashed by rains. However, Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained open for traffic.
The hills across Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall this morning while plains were lashed by rains. However, weather improved in the afternoon and Sun came out giving relief from the cold.
Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Muneer Khan told Excelsior that the traffic from Srinagar-Jammu was allowed to ply from 6 a.m. today but it was snowing heavily in Jawahar Tunnel area making the road slippery. “We stopped traffic at 8 a.m. as 3 inches snow accumulated on the highway, however, it was resumed at 10.30 a.m. as it started raining”, he added.
Khan said that over 4200 vehicles crossed the Jawahar Tunnel towards Jammu and majority of these vehicles had crossed the Patnitop this evening. He said that the traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the areas near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off from their respective districts and tehsil headquarters due to heavy snowfall. Dozens of village, including near the LoC in Machil, Keran, Karnah, Tangdhar, Gurez, Teetwal and Neeru also remained cut off due to heavy snowfall. Moderate to fresh snowfall was recorded since last evening at Sadhana and Razdan passes and Z-Gali in Kupwara.
Gulmarg had fresh snowfall bringing cheers to the tourists who had come to see the snowfall.
