SRINAGAR, Feb 12: The JLNM Hospital authorities have ordered a probe after the relatives of a patient complained that doctors “botched up” an eye surgery in which he almost lost his eyesight.
Family members of Ghulam Muhammad Beigh, 68, said that they admitted him in the hospital for a cataract removal surgery.
Abrar Ahmad, a relative, said that his uncle was diagnosed with Cataract B in his left eye last year and was admitted on January 22 for the surgery at Ophthalmology Department of Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Hospital (JLNMH), Rainawari.
“The operation team led by Dr Haroon Rashid injected anesthesia into his eye because of which the patient almost lost his vision. After this whole episode, the doctor said that the operations cannot be done as there was a problem with his eye,” Abrar claimed.
He said that they were shocked after the doctors botched up the surgery and asked them to take the patient to a private clinic run by a Government doctor.
“We were shocked to know that Government hospital medicos have advised us to take the patient to private clinic, but we were bound and followed their advice,” he said, adding when the doctor saw their patient, she diagnosed him with retinal hemorrhage and she also advised them to take the patient to Amritsar immediately.
They accused the medicos of medical negligence and said that they have spend more than Rs 60, 000 on medical bills till today.
Medical Superintendent, JLNMH, Dr Muhammad Iqbal told Excelsior that relatives of the patient have also registered a complaint in the office and a probe has been ordered into the matter.
“It will take us three days as a three member expert committee has been ordered to probe the matter,” he said.
Defending Dr Haroon Rashid, the MS said that he is a reputed doctor of Kashmir and “because of him our Ophthalmology Department is almost at rank one in the State.”
“We couldn’t conduct his operation as his eyeball was soft which can be detected after injecting a patient,” he said, adding that Dr Sabiya of SHMS is an expert in retinal detachment that was why the patient was referred to her.
