Mercury hovers above normal in north; snow, rain in Kashmir

Mercury hovered above normal levels in most parts of north Indian plains today while temperatures dipped in Kashmir Valley in the wake of continuous rain and fresh snowfall.
It was a sunny day in the national capital as the maximum temperature went up marginally and settled at 29.3 degrees Celsius, five notches above the season’s average. The minimum jumped by 2.6 degrees from yesterday and stood at 17 degrees, six points above normal.
In Punjab and Haryana too, mercury continued to hover above normal levels. Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded the minimum temperature seven notches above normal at 16.2.
In Haryana, Ambala recorded a low of 15.8 degrees, seven degrees above normal while Hisar’s minimum settled six notches above normal at 16.4 degrees. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 9.6 degrees, three notches above normal, while Patiala had a minimum of 15 degrees, five notches above normal.
Maximum temperatures recorded in the states have also been on the rise during the past few days, settling in the range of 24-27 degrees Celsius at most places yesterday.
In Kashmir, tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam and Srinagar had fresh snowfall today while other parts of the Valley received intermittent rains for the fourth consecutive day, forcing closure of the 300-km strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
“Gulmarg received around three feet of snowfall, while Pahalgam recorded 4 cm of fresh snow during the night,” a MeT official said. The minimum temperature in Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, down by nearly three degrees from minus 1.8 yesterday.
The mercury in Pahalgam hill resort in south settled at a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, a decrease of over three degrees from 1.4 degrees yesterday.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, received 21.4 mm of rainfall in the night and witnessed snowfall during the day. The city recorded a low of 4 degrees Celsius, down from 5.4 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Leh, the frontier town in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 3.1 degrees compared to minus 4.4 the previous night. Kargil town registered the minimum at minus 8.6 deg Celsius as against minus 7.2 degrees yesterday. (AGENCIES)
