JAMMU, Feb 20: Expressing serious concern over the spread of swine flu causing death of two people and affecting around 100 others, CPI (M) State secretary and elected MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has called for a comprehensive and a concrete strategy to combat the pandemic.
In a statement issued here, Tarigami has asked the administration to launch a massive awareness campaign among people stressing on precautionary measures to be taken in order to prevent spread of this virulent disease.
He took a strong exception to a tardy response shown by the health authorities which has been one of the contributing factors in aggravating the situation. “It is like that our health authorities were caught unaware. If many cases tested positive for the H1N1 in last few years, why our Health Department failed to enhance infrastructure and launch an awareness campaign on precautions to be taken against this deadly flu in the State”, Tarigami asked.
The functionaries of the Health Department should be brought into mission mode for purpose and to take all anticipatory measures for averting spread of the disease among the masses. Use of mobile internet services be also activated for educating the people about the causes, symptoms and remedial measures of the disease, he stressed.
He invited the attention of Governor NN Vohra to intervene and order the health authorities to take concrete steps to prevent the spread of deadly virus. Tarigami said that the hospitals in the State especially SKIMS, Associated Hospitals of Government Medical Colleges, district and sub district hospitals must be equipped with proper diagnostic centers and treatment facilities without any further delay. He also advised the people of the State to rise to the occasion and take all precautionary measures against this deadly flu.
He appealed the people to immediately get themselves checked up by the nearest doctors if they develop any symptoms related to the swine flu.
