Addressing water shortage

Jammu city and suburbs will be hopefully relieved of shortage of drinking water with the cabinet giving nod to a mega Rs 1008 crore water supply project for the city and its peripheries.  The project is being prepared to cater to the need of drinking water by lifting it from river Chenab near Akhnoor for the Greater Jammu while the city is still facing a shortage of nearly 3 MGL (30 lakh gallons) of water per day. The project will comprise two phases and each phase will cater to the needs of drinking water to specific areas. Shortage of drinking water has been a recurring complaint. The reason is that firstly Jammu city has expanded enormously and now covers an area far greater than what it was a decade or two ago. New colonies and habitats have come into being and there is influx of population besides the woes of urbanization as in any other town in the country. The planning of this mega project has been done with an eye to next three decades and requirements thereof. This important decision of the cabinet is highly appreciated by the civil society. The planning and blue prints are approved and execution of the project will take place soon. But it is also true that regular and uninterrupted supply of drinking water to all parts in the city is largely dependent on the regular supply of power and with normal voltage. At present most of the water is made available from tube wells or by lifting water from Tawi. In any case water supply is closely linked to power supply. While steps are being taken to streamline power supply, it should also contribute to the improvement of water supply. In giving green signal to the mega water project for Jammu, the Government has demonstrated its futuristic vision of demand and supply. Jammu will overcome water supply problem for a long time with the new plan taken up for execution.
