Governor reviews sanitation, developmental activities of Municipal Committee Katra

JAMMU: Governor N. N. Vohra who is Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, held an extensive meeting at the Raj Bhavan here today to review issues relating to the maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation in Katra Town.
Dr. M. K. Bhandari, Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board and B. Mohandaas, Administrator, Municipal Committee, Katra were among those who participated in the meeting.
B. Mohandaas, who is also the Additional CEO of the Shrine Board, briefed the Governor about the various actions being taken by him for streamlining and improving the sanitation related activities of Municipal Committee, Katra.  He informed that the sanitation staff had been assigned time bound duties which he is monitoring to see that the town is kept neat and clean.
The Governor asked the Administrator to immediately identify a suitable location, in consultation with Deputy Commissioner, Reasi, for the scientific disposal of all garbage generated in the Municipal area. He stressed the need to ensure the segregation of garbage at source and its proper disposal, to ensure against environmental pollution.
Mohandaas informed that the Municipality is undertaking an anti-encroachment drive with a view to ensuring that the roads/lanes remain free for rapid and easy movements. The Governor stressed that the Municipal Committee should also carry out greening activities and suitable plantations along the roads, apart from installing attractive grill fencing for guarding against future encroachments.
The Governor asked the Administrator to prepare a detailed action plan for making Katra a clean and attractive town, which would be appreciated by the several million pilgrims who visit the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi every year. The Administrator, with a view to enlarging Municipal facilities for the locals and visiting pilgrims, was asked to identify suitable locations for constructing designed public toilets, installing sturdy and comfortable benches, etc.
Dr, Bhandari, CEO, informed about the poor status of the Katra Municipal infrastructure and referred to the narrow lanes, clogged drains, lack of street lights etc., and about the need for the effective management of all existing deficiencies. The Administrator was directed by the Governor to urgently prepare a plan for the developmental activities to be carried out in 2015-16 so that the required funds could be mobilized.
The Governor also asked CEO to take urgent action to regulate all matters to the operations of Ponies and Pithu on the Track between Katra and the Shrine.
