JAMMU, Feb 27: Divisional Railways Consultative Committee (DRCC), Northern Railways demanded expansion of rail network in Jammu and Kashmir in view of the strategic importance of the State which shares borders with China and Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference, Nitish Mahajan, member, DRCC, Northern Railways sought immediate implementation of projects sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir in the last rail budget and clearance of new ones in the next, besides additional facilities in trains bound for different destinations in the State known for its tourism potential and places of religious significance.
“Tourists and pilgrims, more than double of J&K’s population visit the State every year. Strategically too the State is very important sharing borders with China and Pakistan. China has expanded the road and rail link network at a phenomenal pace over the past few years and hence it is necessary that the rail network should also be expanded in J&K for the conveyance of the tourists”, he added.
Demanding a new rail network between Haridwar-Jammu, Mahajan said currently trains coming from Haridwar have to take a circuitous route through Saharanpur, Roorkee, Haridwar and Luxor.
He demanded additional coaches for Hemkund express from Jammu to Haridwar.
