Weather improves slightly in N India;Jammu-Srinagar NH closed

Weather conditions in some parts of North India, which had been hit by rains and snowfall, improved slightly today even though the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for third consecutive day.
“In the wake of heavy rain and snowfall in the past few days across the state, the Jammu Srinagar Highway continues to remain closed for the third day today,” a police official said in Srinagar.
The vehicular traffic on Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar road also continues to remain closed for the third day due to fresh landslide at Samroli in Udhampur district, he added.
In the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, the stormy conditions subsided a bit but the temperatures continued to remain below freezing point in tribal areas.
“The restoration works are in full swing and power supply has been restored in most places barring some areas in tribal parts of Kullu and Chamba districts. While 160 roads were opened today the Hindustan-Tibet national highway has been opened upto Tapri,” a police official in Shimla said.
In Dehradun, no fresh snowfall was reported, however, the process to clear the accumulated snow was on.
“Body of a jawan was recovered from under huge accumulation of snow taking the toll of those killed in avalanche at Siyalekh check post on India-China border on Monday night to 3,” Pithoragarh District Magistrate Sushil Kumar said.
In the national capital, no rainfall was recorded and the temperature remained within comfortable levels.
“The minimum temperature was recorded at 10.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average and 2.1 degrees less than yesterday while the day temperature settled three notches below the normal at 23.4 degrees Celsius,” a MeT official in Delhi said.
In eastern Uttar Pradesh, light to moderate rain or thundershowers occurred at isolated places while the weather was mainly dry in western parts.
Day temperatures rose markedly in Varanasi, Moradabad divisions, rose appreciably in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Kanpur, Bareilly divisions, rose in Allahabad, Lucknow divisions and changed little in the remaining divisions, the MeT office in Lucknow said.
Light rain also lashed some parts of Punjab and Haryana and the minimum temperatures today fell a few notches below normal in few parts of the states. (AGENCIES)
