Fresh snowfall on upper reaches, rain in plains in Kashmir

SRINAGAR :  The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other heights in the Kashmir valley recorded fresh snowfall while plains, including summer capital, Srinagar, had rains since last night resulting in severe cold.    A Met department spokesperson has predicted heavy rain or snow at scattered places during next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir.    He said that Western Disturbance (WD), which had originated in Arabia sea, is active in the region and could result in fresh snowfall and rain during the next 24 hours.    After witnessing drop in the minimum temperature due to intermittent rain since last night, people woke up to a chilly morning in Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, where many roads and localities were again inundated.    Despite improvement in the night temperature in the border town of Kargil, it was still coldest in the region with mercury settling at minus 8.4 degree Celsius, against yesterday’s minus 11. 4 degree. The lowest temperature recorded in this border town was minus 21 degree on February 6.
Meanwhile, Leh in Ladakh region also witnessed an improvement in the night temperature. Against minus 7.6 degree recorded yesterday, the temperature was minus 3.2 degree.    Gulmarg, world famous health resort, about 55 km from here, which also witnessed an improvement in temperature, was still coldest in Kashmir valley. It recorded minus 4.9 degree against yesterday’s minus 6 degree.
Pahalgam also witnessed an improvement in night temperature due to cloudy sky. It recorded 0.2 degree, against yesterday’s 3.9 degree. The temperature recorded was about 2 degree above normal.
The mercury in summer capital, Srinagar, dipped and settled at 1.2 degree, against 2.5 degree recorded yesterday. The night temperature recorded was about 2.8 degree less than normal.    The spokesperson said Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, also witnessed a dip in night temperature. Against 1.6 degree recorded yesterday, the temperature was 0.8 degree.    Kokernag, another health resort, and north Kashmir district of Kupwara also witnessed a dip in night temperature. Against 0.9 degree recorded yesterday, the temperature was 0.1 degree while mercury dipped and settled at 0.6 degree, against 1.8 degree recorded yesterday in Kupwara.
