UDHAMPUR, Mar 9: The Command Hospital Udhampur is organizing a month long ‘Glaucoma awareness and screening Camp’.
The event was inaugurated by Maj Gen S PS Kochar, MG (Medical), HQ (Northern Command). He appreciated the efforts of Command Hospital (NC) in organizing such an event for the screening of a large group of serving, retired Armed Forces personnel and their dependents.
Maj Gen N Srinath, Commandant of the hospital, emphasized that Glaucoma (Kala Motia) is a common cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Glaucoma is a group of disorders which damages the optic nerve. The major cause of glaucoma is high intraocular pressure. Glaucoma can only be diagnosed by examination by eye specialist. If diagnosed in time, further damage to eye can be prevented. Treatment can prevent further damage from disease and includes medicines, laser, surgery or a combination of above, he added.
Col VK Baranwal, ophthalmologist, of Command Hospital (NC), highlighted the role of various awareness and diagnostic camps and demonstrated the various diagnostic instruments used for diagnosis of this disabling disease. Around one thousand people will be screened and treated for glaucoma during the camp in Army’s command hospital.
