Stray dogs maul 2 children

SRINAGAR, Mar 9: In a tragic incident, two children were mauled to death by a pack of dogs in Handwara town of Kupwara district sparking protests by locals.
A pack of stray dogs appeared in Lacchipora village of this afternoon and attacked two children, who were playing outside their house.
Two children identified as Sobia, 8, daughter of Farooq Ahmad Dar and Irfan, 10, son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan were seriously hurt. Dozens of villagers rushed out of their houses on hearing the screams of the injured children.
The children were removed to the hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead. The deaths triggered off massive protests by the locals in the area.
The dog population over the years has seen alarming increase in Kashmir posing threat to lives of people. As per a survey over one lakh stray dogs are in Srinagar city only.
Every day over two dozen dog bite cases are reported in the Srinagar hospitals. Government over the years has turned a blind eye towards this menace that is posing threat to human lives.
