Stop further contracts for excavation from Ravi River: Minister

KATHUA, Mar 11: Exhorting the need to ensure judicious use of the natural resources for sustainable development while maintaining the ecological balance, the Minister for Industries and Commerce Chander Parkash today directed the officers to stop further contracts for excavation from Ravi River after March 31, 2015.
The Minister, accompanied by officers of Geology & Mining Department, visited Ravi river in Kathua and was apprised about the situation arisen due to unorganized mining of river bed material in both sides of river Ravi.
After ascertaining the ground situation, the Minister said the Government is highly concerned about the issues related to environment and ecology, adding that no such menace will be tolerated which pose any threat to the natural assets of the State.
Chander Parkash said that due consultation will be made with an expert team so that future course of action is initiated without any delay. He said that the matter is viewed seriously and Government will make no stone unturned to protect the life of river Ravi.
ADDC Kathua Narinder Sigh Bali, Director Geology & Mining Farooq Ahmed Khan, District Mineral Officer accompanied the Minister.
