JAMMU, Mar 17: The Congress was reduced to minority in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil after one of the Councilor Asgar Ali Karblaie, who was working as Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) resigned from the post on taking oath as MLA in the Assembly today.
Karblaie has been elected as Congress MLA from Kargil.
In LAHDC Kargil, which has strength of 30 members (26 elected and four nominated), Congress now has been left with 14 members and NC with 15.
Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Prasanna Ramaswamy told the Excelsior that one vacancy has arisen in the LAHDC Kargil and it has to be filled.
On CEC’s resignation following his election as MLA, Ramaswamy said a decision on new CEC will be taken in the next couple of days.
Karblaie, when approached for comments, confirmed that Congress has now been left with 14 members in LAHDC Kargil but declined to comment with whom rest of the 15 members were.
While Congress had gained majority in August 2013 elections to LAHDC Kargil, the NC had nominated its four members with voting rights equaling its strength. However, on the intervention of NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Congress was allowed to head LAHDC Kargil as both the parties were coalition partners in the Government.
Sources said if the CEC election was held now, the NC could have an upper hand and get its Councilor elected as the CEC.
