JAMMU, Mar 19: Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar has stressed for innovative measures to streamline the traffic management in the State. He said that a comprehensive mechanism could help us to achieve tangible results on grass route level in this arena.
Mr. Rajendra was reviewing the traffic management in the twin capital cities and national highway in a meeting of traffic police officers held at Police Headquarters (PHQ) here today. He said that implementation of traffic rules is necessary to avoid road accidents which claims precious human lives.
All stakeholders need to realise their responsibility and collective measures to be adopted for better traffic management in the State. Road users also need to be aware about their responsibilities towards the sensitive issue, which has become a major concern for all sections of the society, he added.
DGP disclosed that the volume of cities and towns is swelling day by day and the road traffic has immensely increased in the recent years. In view of this, responsibility of traffic police has also increased and they have to perform more efficiently to make the road users abide by the traffic rules.
Mr. Rajendra emphasised that transparency in the working of traffic police is imperative to bring the visible changes in their working, besides to strengthen their image. He asserted that undesirable elements in the wing would not be tolerated and any personnel found indulging in any malafide activity would be punished severely.
The meeting was apprised that in view of recent inclement weather National Highway was damaged at various places due to which it had become mandatory to impose restrictions on traffic movement on National Highway.
Earlier, the Inspector General of Police (Traffic), J. P. Singh, gave detailed resume about the functioning and deployment plan of traffic police in the cities, towns and national highway. In the twin capital cities alternate routes have been adopted to avoid the jams during the peak hours and traffic signal system at various junctions has been experiencing good results. He said that in recent special drive against the traffic violators, the department has realised more than Rs. 22 lakh in the State during past 10 days.
Among others, the meeting was attended by DIG Traffic Jammu, Ashkoor Ahmed Wani and other traffic police officers.
