Uproar over terror attack

JAMMU, Mar 20: The terrorists attack on Police Station in Kathua district created uproar in the Legislative Assembly with Opposition parties terming the incident as outcome of intelligence failure and seeking clarification from the Government.
As soon as proceedings of the House started, National Conference MLA, Devender Singh Rana said, “during the past few months we have been listening that security grid has been strengthened especially on the borders following repeated cease-fire violations but today’s incident has exposed the tall claims”.
“It is unfortunate that Bharatiya Janata Party, which used to raise hue and cry over such incidents when it was in opposition, is completely mum over today’s incident only because it is in power now both in J&K and at Centre”, Mr Rana further said.
He was supported by other National Conference MLAs and those of Congress party, who together wanted to know the steps being taken by the Government to thwart such attacks and how the militants were able to launch the attack despite tall claims about strengthening of security grid.
Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh, while expressing concern over the incident, said, “we all pay tributes to those who lost lives in the terrorist attack”. He also gave brief account of the incident to the House. However, Opposition expressed dis-satisfaction over the statement of Deputy Chief Minister and said, “we want to know what steps the Government is going to take to prevent such incidents in future”.
“This is the outcome of intelligence failure and that of strengthened security grid about which tall claims were being made by the Union Government”, Devender Rana said, adding “you cannot escape your responsibility by just making vague statement”.
Referring to one aspect of Deputy Chief Minister’s statement wherein he expressed ignorance about identity of the deceased, Mr Rana said, “whenever such incidents took place in the past you shed crocodile tears and now you are making childish statement”.
Amidst uproar, CPM MLA, Mohd Yousaf Tarigami said, “this issue should be debated in the House and we all should be taken into confidence on strategy to thwart such incidents in future”. He, however, advised the MLAs not to play politics on the issue and speak in one voice to condemn the incident.
Later, on behalf of entire House, Speaker condemned the incident asking the Government to take measures to strengthen the security network and check such attacks from happening. He said the sympathies of the entire House are with the families of those who were martyred in the cowardly attack.
