JAMMU, Mar 25: Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Science and Technology for Human Development’ at Jammu  University, here today, the Union Minister of State for  Development of North Eastern Region (Independent Charge),  PMO, Personal & Public Grievances, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, called for exploring the unexplored potential of  India.
“India has immense potential of Human Resource which wants to leave an imprint in the field of Science and Technology, we need to encourage them,” he said while referring to a general complaint of dearth of young scientists.  He further said that we should not mess up with our children who should be allowed to choose their field of interest.
Referring about the initiative of the Government for encouraging young scientists and students, Dr Singh stressed that young boys and girls should be given exposure to explore the thing they see around.  He also made reference to India’s success stories like Mars Mission, Chanderyaan-I etc and said that such spectacular achievements bring self esteem  and encourage younger generation opting for a career in Science.
The Union Minister assured all possible support to the Jammu University in its pursuit to scientific research and said that the Government of India of India was committed for encouraging the initiatives in this regard.
The three-day national seminar on “Science and Technology for Human Development” and SAP (UGC) Workshop on “Biodiversity and Conservation: Present Status and Future Perspective” is being  organized by the Department of Zoology, JU, in collaboration with the Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata and Jammu Chapter, ISCA.
Earlier, in his presidential address, JU vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma called upon the scientists for better communication and collaborative efforts for the overall progress and the growth in various areas of human concerns. He regretted that despite great improvement in the development of scientific culture, pursuit of excellence and achievement were still lacking and this requires close coordination between the scientists and other stakeholders. He also called for the conduct of State Level Science Congress and said that it is an appropriate venture, which provides the platform for presentation and cross-fertilization of ideas by local scientists.
In his welcome address, Prof K K Sharma, Convener, Jammu Chapter, ISCA and Dean Life Science, JU, dwelt on the focal theme of the Seminar. He informed that more than 160 participants from around 20 Universities and research institution of the country are participating in the seminar. There will be around twenty invited lectures by the scientists during the three-day seminar, he added.
Prof A K Saxena, president, Indian Science Congress Association 2015, Kolkata, gave an overview of the activities of the ISCA since its inception and informed that the 103rd session of the Indian Science Congress shall be held at the University of Mysore from January 3 to 7, 2016.
Dr Arun Kumar, general secretary (Scientific Activities) ISCA, Kolkata also spoke on the occasion.
Dr Vijayalaxmi, general secretary, Indian Science Congress Association 2015, Kolkata was also present on the occasion.
Prof Roopma Gandotra, Co-convener of the Seminar and HoD Zoology presented the vote of thanks.
