JAMMU, Apr 6: Hundreds of people from Nikki Tawi and Mandal areas today held again a strong demonstration against no road connectivity to their villages and demanded immediate reconstruction of damaged bridge over river Tawi.
The protesting villagers, led by senior Congress leader and social activist Kapil Singh, also blocked Jammu-Pathankote National Highway at Satwari for more than two hours. Due to protest, hundreds of vehicles got stranded leading to inconvenience to people.
They raised slogans against the State Government for its failure to start work for reconstruction of damaged bridge, which, according to them, had been affecting their day-to-day life adversely.
Accusing State Government of adopting delaying approach the villagers sought the intervention of Chief Minister for getting constructed the Nikki Tawi area bridge.
“We strongly condemn the State Government’s indifferent attitude which has been adding to the miseries. The students of 45 villages have been facing hardships to reach their schools and colleges due to poor road connectivity to their areas”, they said.
Later, the SDM, Tehsildar of Marh and senior police officers rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors saying that the work will start with in two days.
After the assurance, the protestors lifted their dharna with a warning that if the work will not start within a weak time, they will launch massive protest.
It is to mention that the bridge got washed in floods in September last year. Thereafter, the Army had constructed a Pontoon bridge which also recently suffered damage due to floods, leading to no road connectivity to Nikki Tawi and Mandal areas.
