DC Leh reviews functioning of ASHA, Anganwari workers

LEH, Apr 10: District Magistrate, Leh, Saugat Biswas, who is also the Chairman of the District Health Society, Leh chaired a meeting of the District Accredited Social Health Activist level Monitoring Committee today in which the functioning of the ASHA, Anganwari workers and the FMPHWs was reviewed.
He emphasised the role of ASHA as an activist and said that an ASHA as a health activist creates awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilizes the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services in the community.
The Chairman felt the need to impart training and exposure visits for the ASHA and Anganwari workers so that they could imbibe the best practices in vogue in the country. Biswas also envisaged creating a cadre of Master Trainers to train all grass-root health workers in the district. “We should send the ASHAs, Anganwari workers and FMPHWs for high end training and exposure visit at the best places in the country so that they emerge as highly motivated and trained health workers, and can impart services to the remotest locations in the district”, he said.
The Chairman taking the harsh weather condition of Ladakh region especially during winters into consideration gave directions to observe Village Health Nutrition Day especially during winter season to promote immunization and other health related issues.
Biswas advised CMO to depute a medical officer who once a month will preside over a Village Health Sanitation & Nutrition Committee for monitoring and for the guidance on health related issues. He also discussed matters relating to incentives to ASHAs, birth rates, procurement of HBNC kit among others.
Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Leh Dr Phunchok Wangchuk opened the meeting with a brief welcome note. Later, District ASHA Coordinator Dr Yangchan Dolma talking about the importance of a ASHA in a community gave a detailed power-point presentation about ASHA functionality report/achievement under NRHM.
