Malik, others detained; 15 hurt

Srinagar, Apr 10: At least 15 people including 8 police men were injured in clashes between protesters and police today after Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Yasin Malik, was detained along with his several supporters.
Malik along with his supporters led a march against Government’s proposal to set up “composite townships” for Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley.
As protesters came out near Bud Shah Chowk, they were stopped by police and Malik and his several supporters were detained. Supporters of Malik pelted stones at Police who in turn fired tear smoke shells.
The ding dong battles between police and the JKLF activists continued for several hours. Police and para-military was heavily deployed in Maisuma locality.
Due to clashes, all the shops and commercial establishments were shut in the area while traffic also came to halt.
Hurriyat Conference (G) leaders and activists took out a protest rally from Iqra Masjid Sarai Bala against proposed move. The protesters were detained by police at Hari Singh High Street but there was no violence.
A protest was also held at Jamia Masjid in downtown against Government move. After the protest, minor stone-throwing clashes between youth and police at Gojwara.
A police spokesman said that situation remained normal across the Valley. Some incidents of stone pelting were reported from Maisuma, Kawdara in Srinagar and Palhallan in Baramulla in which 8 policemen received injuries.
