RAJOURI, Apr 10: The Deputy Commissioner Rajouri ordered Magisterial inquiry after the people held strong protest and blocked Jammu-Poonch road here for about five hours as a local youth drowned in the river after being chased by some policemen this afternoon.
Reports said that Raj Kumar (33), son of Des Raj, resident of Rajouri town was wanted by police in a case related to dispute with the wife. The police party was looking for him. He was running a ‘Phari’ in the market in Rajouri town. At around 3.15 pm, some cops noticed him in the market and tried to arrest him.
Raj Kumar ran towards river site and tried to cross the river. Then he drowned in the deep water. The cops ran away. Some people who noticed it later fished out the body. The family members and relatives of the deceased came to know about the matter.
The people then blocked Nagesh bridge and started protest against police. SHO and SSP Rajouri later moved to the spot but the people refused to lift dharna. They were raising slogans against police and demanding Magisterial inquiry, Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of the deceased and action against the cops chasing Raj Kumar.
Later, the Deputy Commissioner Rajouri and DIG Rajouri-Poonch Range reached the spot and assured the agitating people to hold Magisterial probe. The police also agreed to pay Rs one lakh to the dependents of the family as immediate relief. The people then lifted dharna at around 8.30 pm. A large number of vehicles on Jammu-Poonch highway remained stranded for long and passengers faced hardship.
