Legal Metrology Department to be armed with magisterial powers : Zulfkar

JAMMU, Apr 13:   Underscoring the need for total commitment and social responsiveness to consumer cause, Minister for CA&PD and Tribal Affairs, Ch  Zulfkar Ali   today called for   active involvement of  stakeholders for  effective  implementation of Consumer Protection laws.
“There is dire need for launching a vigorous campaign to make people conscious and aware about their rights and responsibilities,” the Minister said at the Consumer Awareness Programme organized by Consumer Protection Organization in collaboration with YCET College here today.
The minister said that purpose of any act or law is realised only when the public become conscious of their duties to follow their respective model code both as consumers and the service renders, as every individual, irrespective of their position, is a customer in one or the other way.
Laying stress on people’s participation in effective implementation of Consumer Protection Laws, the minister said   the effectiveness of policies, schemes and programmes of the Government depends on the involvement of the institutions and the people at large. For this purpose, he impressed upon the concerned for launching massive awareness programmes in urban as well as rural areas for educating common masses.
Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to provide better services, the Minister said   that consumers’ interest will be protected by infusing accountability and efficiency in the system, so that buyers get their due for money in terms of quality and quantity.
While highlighting few measures, the Minister informed that the fruits and vegetable sellers were asked to display signboard depicting day to day rates for the convenience of the consumers besides price committee meeting will also be convened from time to time to reassess the rates of essential commodities.
The Minister assured that Ordinance for Hoarding and Profiteering will be implemented in coming time to keep a close vigil on overcharging and fraudulent practices. He further added that   Legal Metrology Department will be delegated with magisterial powers to make them more effective for timely redressal of consumers’ grievances.
Earlier, a debate competition was also organized and mementoes were given to participants.
Among others Director CAPD, Joint Controller Legal Metrology Department, Chairman YCET College, Director YCET College, President CPO, General Secretary CPO besides students and large number of people were present on the occasion.
