This refers to the news item’Urdu can bring India, Pakiatan together’ (DE,Apr 5,2015). The observation by the poets and academicians at the 17th Jashn- e- Bahar Mushaira in New Delhi that Urdu , being a link language, belongs to everyone and that it can play a crucial role in bringing India and Pakistan and the people of the two countries together,speaks volume about the sentiments and feelings of the people of the two countries who have been divided physically and politically but who long and yearn to meet each other and take pride in cherishing the roots of their common culture and heriage.It is the Urdu language which serves as a means of powerful bond between them.No doubt, Urdu was born in Hindustan and it acts as a cohesive force to bind the people of two people together as it is spoken,understood and read by a large number of people from both the countries.It is the language in which Mirza Ghalib, Faiz, Ahmed Faiz, Mir Taqi Mir, Sahir Ludhianvi, Javid Akhter,Bahadur Shah Zafar and many others have written beautiful poems, ghazals, songs,couplets etc which enthrall the people all over the globe,especially those living in the Indian subcontinent thus,transcending national and international borders.It is through this language that singers such as Ghulam Ali,Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,Mehndi Hasan,Abida Praveen, Jagjeet Singh,etc have sung immortal songs, ghazals, qowaalies etc which are appreciated and listened with great interest in both the countries.Urdu also played a key role in the Indian struggle for independence. The Urdu service of All India Radio is quite popular in Pakistan and some programmes such as ‘Awaaz de Kahan hai’ played an important role in uniting the people of both sides across the border.Thus,Urdu is the cultural heritage of both the countries and steps need to be taken by both the countries to let this language flourish and bloom across the world as it is the repository of our joint culture and values of the times gone by.
