SRINAGAR, Aug 8: Police arrested more than 20 National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers as they tried to march towards the city centre and raise protest in support of their demands here today.
A large number of volunteers under the banner of National Youth Corps Volunteers Association (NYCVA) assembled at the Press Enclave here and raised slogans in support of their demands.
“We are without salaries for the last six months which has pushed us to the hilt. We are working in various ACR’s office, ADC’s office, BDO’s office, Tourism department, CEO’s office and LAWDA and despite putting in best efforts we are not being treated well and above all salaries are not being paid to us,” said Mudasir Hassan, State President, NYCVA while addressing the volunteers.
Mudasir said that volunteers performed very well while discharging their duties in Census 2011 and Panchayat elections held last year. He alleged that both the State and Central Governments have assured that their issues would be sorted out saying that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
“We met youth services and sports minister, R. S Chib few days back. He said that the state government is contemplating to appoint NYCs in various departments. The proposal is good but it needs to be implemented in letter and spirit. Otherwise we would come out and lodge strong protest in support of our demands,” said Mudasir.
Mudasir said that the monthly honorarium should be converted into salary and that the services of NYC volunteers working in various departments should be continued.
