JAMMU, Apr 25: The National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare ‘May Day’ as a ‘Gazetted holiday’ throughout the country.
“Under Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to May Day martyrs and recognizing the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country, the Prime Minister should declare the day as a gazetted holiday”, NMC president Subash Shastri said in a memorandum sent to Prime Minister.
Shastri said that because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights throughout the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy across the globe should declare May 1 as a Gazetted holiday.
The NMC chief added that the then Government led by V P Singh had declared May Day as a Gazetted holiday in the country in 1990, why it has not been done there after.
Shastri also urged Modi to immediately provide a special financial package of Rs 2000 crore to J&K Government to meet expenditure on account of regularizations of the services of sixty one thousand daily rated workers in the State.
He reminded the Central leaders of the commitment they had made during the parliamentary and J&K State Assembly elections that if voted to power, the issue of regularization of 61,000 daily rated workers working in the various departments in J&K would be addressed suitably.
He also demanded enhancement of monthly salaries of daily rated workers to Rs 10,000, declaring Jammu city as B-I City, including Jammu city in the list of 100 smart cities, and strictly implementing all Central Labour laws in J&K.
