SRINAGAR : Only one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar will ply for three days starting today on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. A traffic police official said today that said the decision was taken to allow vehicles, carrying Jammu resident Darbar Move employees, ply smoothly on the highway.
No vehicle from Srinagar to Jammu will be allowed during these days, he said, adding that even security forces have been advised not to travel on the highway during the period. The darbar move offices, including that of the Chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and top bureaucrats were closed at winter capital Jammu on April 24.
The offices were scheduled to open on May 4 in Srinagar, the summer capital. However, on account of holiday on Buddh Purnima the offices will now open on May 5. Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in the country which has two capitalsJammu during winter and Srinagar for summer. Meanwhile, all Kashmir bound vehicles, stranded on the other side of the Ramban due to closure of the highway following landslides, were cleared late last night after the highway was reopened by Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers besides empty trucks and oil tankers, which left Srinagar yesterday reached Jammu last night. Only one-way traffic was being allowed on the highway after landslides and soil erosion damaged the road at several places for the past four months. However, now BRO are working to repair the damaged portion of the road so that two vehicles could pass easily the area affected by landslides and soil erosion.
The highway remained frequently closed this winter, particularly in March and first fortnight of April, resulting in acute shortage of essentials, particularly vegetables in the valley, where the prices of these items were still very high. (AGENCIES)
