SRINAGAR, May 3:
With people in Nepal taking to micro-blogging site Twitter to express their anguish over the coverage of post-earthquake situation by Indian mainstream media, former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president Omar Abdullah today said the reaction were similar to the outrage expressed by Kashmiri people after last year’s flood in the valley.
The local reaction to Indian media coverage in post-earthquake Nepal is nearly similar to the reaction in post-flood Srinagar last year, Mr Abdullah wrote on Twitter. The tweet by the NC president was prompted by hashtag GoHomeIndianMedia, which has been trending since early this morning.
Hundreds of people living in Nepal since early this morning used this hashtag to express their anger and frustration over the coverage of the disaster and its aftermath by mainstream Indian media. GoHomeIndianMedia which was the top trending hashtag in Nepal with more than 50000 tweets on the topic, topped the charts in India as well with Indians expressing their solidarity and support with the Nepali people.
The national media was criticised by Kashmiri people for its coverage of September floods last year. People in Kashmir alleged that the national media only highlighted the role of Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and ignored the contribution of Kashmiri youth, who were the main force behind the rescue operations during floods, he added.
