Compensation given to accident victim’s family after strong protest

JAMMU, May 8: The family members, relatives and neighbours of a man who was killed yesterday in a road accident after a tempo of GD Goenka School hit the scooty he was riding on at Mishriwala, today staged a protest demonstration against administration of GD Goenka School in front of the main gate of the school, along with the body of the deceased man.
About 200 people including family members and neighbours of the deceased man who has been identified as Tarsem Lal (50) son of Amar Chand, a resident of Hirachak, Halka Marh, assembled this morning in front of entrance gate of GD Goenka School near Patialachak in Nagbani area of Domana and staged a strong protest demonstration against the school authorities.
Due to huge gathering of people, the vehicular traffic on Marh Road was also affected for several hours. The people raised slogans against the school administration for hiring un-experienced drivers for their school buses. They further alleged that the drivers of the school buses rashly drive the vehicles and do not follow Supreme Court guidelines.
Alleging that Tarsem Lal died due to negligent driving of the driver of the school tempo, they demanded the school administration to pay adequate compensation to the family of the deceased person.
On getting information, senior police officers including SSP Jammu, Uttam Chand and officers of civil administration including SDM Marh and Tehsildar Marh reached the spot. After their intervention and negotiation, the school administration gave a compensation of Rs 12 lakh to the family of the deceased person following which the protestors pacified, lifted the dead body and later performed last rites.
Meanwhile, SSP Jammu, Uttam Chand has advised all the schools to follow Supreme Court guidelines and do not hire un-experienced drivers for their school buses and ensure that drivers of the school buses do not cross maximum speed limit. He further said that they have also directed all SDPOs to ensure that all the schools in their respective areas follow these guidelines.
