SRINAGAR : Sun was playing hide and seek since this morning before finally going behind the clouds this afternoon in Kashmir valley, where a Western Disturbance (WD) is already active and another -is likely to hit on May 11.
However, mercury remained above normal though winds also continued, making weather pleasant in the valley, where Pahalgam, health resort in south Kashmir, recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 5.6 degree Celsius, about a notch below normal.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be light rain or thundershowers at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours due to WD already active in the region. He said a fresh WD is likely to affect the state from May 11 onwards. After recording yet another above normal minimum temperature, summer capital Srinagar woke up to a pleasant morning, though sun was playing hide and seek before finally going behind the clouds this afternoon, which has resulted in drop in the maximum temperature.
The spokesman further said that maximum temperature yesterday in summer capital was 28.2 degrees, four notches above normal, while the minimum was 12.8 degrees, about two notches above normal in the city. Traces of rain besides strong winds were experienced last night in the summer capital. Sky would be partly cloudy tomorrow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 28 and 13 degrees respectively.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where snow on the peaks had started melting, recorded a minimum of 7 degrees, two notches above normal, he said, adding that Qazigund registered 10.1 degrees, Kokernag 10.7 degree and Kupwara 10.3 degree, a notch above normal.
He said the minimum temperature at Leh in Ladakh recorded a considerable jump and settled at 10.1 degrees against yesterday’s 6.9 degrees, while temperature of border town Kargil was not available.
However, the spokesman said sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 23 degrees and 9 degree respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh. Sky would be partly cloudy at winter capital, Jammu, where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 38 degrees and 26 degrees respectively tomorrow, he added. (AGENCIES)
