Efforts on to open Anganwadi centre in uncovered areas: Sakina

SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo today said that Rs.21 crore have been distributed among 63998 beneficiaries of District Kupwara under various social welfare schemes like ISSS, IGNOAPS, IGNWPS, NFBS, CSSS by the Government during 2011-12.
The Minister was speaking during a Rehabilitation Council awareness camp organised by District Social Welfare Department, Kupwara. She said that 32 welfare schemes run by the Social Welfare Department are presently under implementation in the State for the welfare of weaker sections, handicapped and  senior citizens which include providing of scholarship to the students belonging to the ST/SC/OBC communities, financial support to families falling under below the poverty line and families of victims of militancy.
On the occasion, she also distributed cheques worth Rs. 27.40 lakh for militancy hit victims scheme. Out of this amount, Rs. 19.80 lakh was distributed among 212 students under scholarship ‘without discrimination’ scheme, Rs. 36 lakh under pension to widow, old aged and handicapped persons, Rs. 1 lakh for marriage assistance under RMV and Rs. 6.30 lakh under Nation Foundation for Communal Harmony among 70 students.
The Minister said the main purpose of conducting this awareness camp by Rehabilitation Council  was to share information with the common people about the dozens of welfare schemes meant for those sections of the society which are living in far flung and remote areas, people falling under below the poverty line, SC/ST communities, providing succour to downtrodden, destitute, old age persons economically weaker sections and especially empowering the women community neglected from centuries .
Ms. Sakina asked the people particularly the women folk to come forward and get benefit of these welfare schemes.
Ms. Sakina also said that presently 28,000 Anganwari Centres including 2771 Centres in District Kupwara are functional and efforts are on to cover the uncovered areas. She said that 1661 children have been covered under the National Foundation for Communal Harmony   in the District Kupwara.
Ms Sakina asked the officers of the Social Welfare Department to conduct such kind of awareness also in the remote areas and share the information about the various welfare schemes with the common people as they are yet un aware of these scheme. She said ultimate goal of the Social Welfare Department and Women’s Development Corporation is to empower women by providing them skill development training and other incentives so that they may be able to earn their livelihood with respect and honour.
On the occasion, the District Development Commissioner, Kapwara Mr. Sarmad Hafiz, Managing Director, Women’s Development Corporation,Nahida Soz and Director Rehabilitation council  also spoke.
Awareness Camp was attended by among others, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, District Social Welfare Officers, CDPOs, Aaganwardi works, Helpers and beneficiaries of the district.
