KATHUA, May 18: The irate residents of Ghati and adjoining areas held protest against Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department and blocked the Jammu-Pathakot National Highway near Sakthechak here today.
Amid slogans against PHE Department, large number of people from Ghati and adjoining areas assembled near Sakthechak on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway here and held protest.
The protestors alleged that PHE Department has turned deaf ear to the problems being faced by them due to non-availability of water.
“We are facing water scarcity for the past one week and no one from the PHE Department has come to redress the problem till date, which forced them to come on roads”, they added.
They stated that the non-availability of the drinking water has forced the people to fetch water from distant places in scorching heat.
Later, the protestors blocked the vehicular movement on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway. Long traffic queues were witnessed during the protest.
On getting information, PHE officials and senior police officers rushed to the spot and assured the protestors to redress their water scarcity problem at the earliest.
After the assurance, the protestors dispersed and the vehicular movement was restored on the National Highway.
The residents of Mah area of Lakhanpur also raised their voice against water scarcity and asked the PHE Department to redress their problem on priority basis, otherwise they will come on roads to protest against the department.
