Man arrested over vandalism at S Korean consulate in Hiroshima

HIROSHIMA, Aug 12: Police arrested a man in Hiroshima for allegedly throwing a brick at the South Korean Consulate General in the southwestern Japan city, they said.
Masakazu Yuasa, a 44-year old man with no fixed occupation, was arrested on suspicion of vandalism after he turned himself yesterday afternoon and said he had damaged the building, according to police.
Yuasa, who claims to be a member of a right-wing organization, told the police he vandalized the building out of anger at South Korean President Lee Myung Bak’s visit to disputed islands claimed by Japan on Friday.
Police officers on regular patrol found glass in the front door of the consulate general smashed and a brick nearby at around 2:50 am. No one was inside the building.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has voiced strong opposition to Lee’s visit to the disputed islands in the Sea of Japan and temporarily recalled Japan’s ambassador to South Korea.
Japan is considering taking its dispute with South Korea over the islands controlled by Seoul to the International Court of Justice. The islands are called Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea .(agencies)
