JAMMU, May 23: Dr Sheetal Singh, former Principal Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and leading surgeon of the country, has achieved a rare distinction by removing gall bladder stones from just four years old child using Microlaparoscopy.
Dr Singh said though gall bladder stones are common in the State, this was for the first time that the stone were found in just four years old child named Ankush.
After studying all pros and cons of the surgery, Dr Sheetal Singh decided to go ahead with gall bladder operation to remove the stones using Microlaparoscopy.
“The operation was successful and the child is recovering fast,” Dr Singh said.
He recalled that previously recorded case in the medical history for gall bladder stones was a seven years old boy, who was subjected to open Cholecystectomy at SMGS hospital in 1987 in Srinagar by Dr MN Ahmad.
He said the challenges in the surgery at such low age was that laparoscopy had to be conducted infusing the CO2 gas at very low pressure of 8mm as compared to the adults, where a pressure of 14 to 15 is safe.
Dr Ranbushan gave the anesthesia while Inderpal Singh, TP Singh and Deljeet Singh assisted in the rare surgery.
