UDHAMPUR, May 30: In a high voltage drama, locals of Tikri block today foiled administration’s attempt to dump quintals of rotten rice, which was meant for flood victims but did not reach to them due to sheer negligence of the authorities.
This huge quantity of rice was sent by the Chhatisgarh Government as relief for the flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir, last September. However, due to negligence of the District administration, maximum bags of this rice got decayed and had been dumped in various stores in Udhampur.
Since, it was no more worth edible, the administration finally planned to dump it at some place so that manure and fertilizer could be made out of it.
However, this morning as soon as JCB machines reached near the identified site and started excavating for dumping the rotten rice, a large number of locals, mostly women, assembled and held a protest demonstration. They claimed that the rotten rice would emit foul and irritating smell thereby creating problem for them.
Following the strong resistance by the agitating locals, the JCB machines and trucks loaded with rotten rice had to move back.
