Analyzing the balance sheet

Shiban  Khaibri
Although a balance sheet is normally an accounting standard, a statement of Assets and Liabilities of a person, firm, company etc as it exists on any particular date and would not refer to any Government per- se , yet in ordinary sense we very often  invoke its kernel  in literary parlance  to strike a point. While appraising or to speak technically, analyzing the balance sheet, we know more clearly about the position of the business, investments, the quantum of profits, the position of sundry debtors, creditors, bad debts, leverages etc. It is, therefore, a natural corollary that there should be one who really knows the nuts and bolts of the balance sheet to present a correct view point. While appraising the performance of the Government under  Modi, how many have sincerely been honest, if not capable enough, in analyzing it, motivated solely by the pain (Darad) of the country, particularly by the Congress Party – is well known and the fact, that “failures on all fronts” certificate appears to be based on Goebbels’ theory of presenting non existing things as gospel truths. Lallo Yadav, not knowing, for instance, which methodology he employed to declare Modi as “total failure”, has obviously emerged among front runners in not “awarding” even one mark to him. The quality of appraisal is so much “professional” and of such a standard so as to describe the Prime Minister as “abnormal” by a person of the stature of Ghulam Nabi Azad who appeared much prompted by Mallikarjun Kharge’s charge that Modi “was used to make strange statements”. Azad further added, “We consulted the Doctors who said, he is abnormal”. Such remarks are how Modi is put in the citadel of performance on the first year of the present Government. It is precisely the ugliest picture of dissent landing at hate.
This writer does not say that Modi scored very high, a small period of one year notwithstanding but as a top opinion which matters, taking  all aspects into consideration put it,  a “first division” and not a “distinction”. However, let anyone from among the hard core critics of Modi, mainly out of compulsion, come out to pin point where he erred either due to wrong visualizing or improper handling or how his government could have done better. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that as an opposition, the Congress chose the occasion to attempt to consolidate and up the sagged morale of its members by turning the occasion to launch a scathing attack on the Government in general and Modi in particular, dubbing the one year of Modi Government as “shattered dreams and nation betrayed” as also the choicest one even of declaring Modi as clinically “abnormal”. Perhaps, he is pilloried to this extent as it is he, who brought Congress to such a pass of mere 44.
The conventional and traditional whip of communalism with which Modi used to be lavishly “punished” day in and day out, to habitually instill fear among sections of Indian society, is nowhere from anywhere appearing even symbolically as   there was no communal tension anywhere in the country which is the biggest achievement of Modi as a truly secular leader of 125 crore “deshvasi”. Some insignificant minor local tensions, if anywhere happened, were reportedly all from non BJP ruled states, further strengthened the tangible shape and structure of the intrinsic secular credentials of this government. Nowhere, whether as a rhetoric or as a response to or as a reference, did Modi ever talk of anything other than  economy, development, agriculture, employment, social security measures, fertilizers, technology,  education to all- in particular to girls, cleanliness, rural and urban infrastructure, subsidies, and explained wherever he spoke,  the nitty – gritty of the subject, more of Economics, finance, commerce, international matters, cultural and social issues and the like than some of those who only possessed the academic tags. No wonder our economy is currently running at over 7.4% annual growth and as such ranking among one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The laudable  contribution of this Government is in the area of ascending of foreign relations and foreign image , letting India get its due position in the comity of countries , not only those which matter like the US, China, France, Germany, Japan, Australia etc but even the small countries . We have broken the cloistered position in our relations with other countries and if Modi is repeatedly criticized by the “future hope” of the Congress Rahul Gandhi over “Saray deshon main gaye, par kissan kay ghar nahi gaye” should also present data of how many homes of Kissans did Dr. Manmohan Singh or the Congress leadership visit who in UPA1 and 2 rule committed suicides as between 2005 and 2012, as many as 146373 farmers committed suicide. Who ruled India during the period under reference and how many families did the then PM visit, Rahul Ji may please reply and also whether the solution of the problem is there by merely “visiting”?
The Nuclear deal which was pending with Manmohan Singh government for more than 6 years, Modi clinched it just within its four months in office. It was Modi’s charismatic leadership as against policy paralysis which we were previously helplessly watching that India and Australia signed an important civil nuclear deal for uranium sale to India for “peaceful power generation”. It was the trust alone, yes- the trust alone about the leadership of Modi that Australia agreed to “happily trust India with our uranium in months, years and decades”. Should we Indians not feel proud of the moment and should it become a point of irritant jibe to be cast on Modi out of sheer jealousy like an examinee not in a position to fill the answer book with answers and solutions to the questions and problems set in the exam paper, throws ink on the answer book of its performing brilliant neighbour who attempted successfully all the questions and sums, thus preventing him to get good ratings. What then, if that very brilliant examinee student had gone with a good “suit and  boot” to appear in the exams and not tried vain fully to impress the invigilators in the exam hall by folding and unfolding  exercise of the sleeves of the “Kurta” and metaphorically doing a mike to the pen by adjusting it backwards and forwards.
Can anybody in India deny that after the demise of  Indira Gandhi, if anyone restored the sanctity of the Prime Minister’s office and rid it of any type of remote controlling, it is Modi and Modi alone? An atmosphere from sheer cynicism and frustration got transformed into some hope.  The Government looks like moving in right direction, some cohesiveness in it as one single entity appears to be functioning well with a vision and a strategy both. Results or fruits may not appear imminent but there is no denying the fact that we have entered a phase of massive economic.
At least, a scam free year, corruption to a large extent controlled , political maneuvering of toppling and replacing by “fronts” and “Morchas” rendered  irrelevant as they were thriving in coalition business where pulling the rug when and where was the main threat, rendering the decision making process very difficult and not without interfering from invisible and apparent forces.
It sounds ludicrous as to why “pro corporate” blame tag or “anti corporate” view point in India is considered as very pragmatic. It was true of even the BJP when they were in opposition. Do such political parties want corporate world to wind up in India and close all their business and investment entities and spin “Charkha” and “Takli” and achieve economic prosperity? They need equal attention from the Government to strike a balance on both sides of the balance sheet.
