No respite from heat wave in Jammu, temp crosses 40 deg

JAMMU:There is no respite from hot weather conditions in this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir as mercury crossed 40 degrees Celsius with another hottest day here today.
“The temperature crossed 40 degree mark in this season again and it was the another hottest day,” a MeT official here said.
He said  the maximum temperature recorded was 40.5 degrees Celsius, adding, “the temperature will rise in the coming days.”
He added that though the temperature fluctuated between 36 degrees to 38 degrees earlier and it also decreased in the last days due to fresh snowfall at upper reaches in Bhaderwah and Kashmir Valley.
Jammu and Kashmir Government had also announced vacations in Summer Zone in view of prevailing climatic conditions from June 13 to July 27.
People however, preferred to stay indoor while the two-wheeler riders covered their face to protect themselves from the heat wave.
Protests also broke out across the district over erratic water supply and unscheduled power cuts.
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, who also holds power portfolio yesterday said  the present dispensation is clearing the liability of Rs 4000 crore passed on by previous NC-Congress government.
“Rs 35 crore is still to be paid to the companies supplying the new transformers and there is also 40 pc of power theft was recorded,” he said, adding that the government is making all efforts to provide continuous power supply to the consumers across the state especially in summer zone.
Spare transformers have also been kept to meet emergencies at the time of technical snags, he added.
Meanwhile an official of PHE department said that presently 20 lakh gallons of water per day is short across Jammu district despite supply of water from major plants.
Water Tanks have also been pressed into service to areas facing acute water shortage in this scroching heat.
