KOLKATA, June 12:
Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen M M S Rai today told troops in Manipur that attacks by insurgent groups were likely to increase and hence protective measures should be taken to fend them off, official sources said.
During a visit to Manipur to review the security situation there, he complimented troops for the well-executed operation along the Myanmar border which was undertaken in the wake of the June 4 ambush by insurgents of an Army convoy that left 18 soldiers dead.
A statement issued by the Army from Imphal said Rai, the GOC-in-C of Eastern Command, discussed the preparation and planning for future operations with the local commanders. Senior Air Force officers were also present during the discussions.
Stressing on people-friendly operations to minimise hardships for locals, Rai explained the need to take protective measures to prevent attacks by insurgent groups which, he said, were likely to increase.
He asked troops to follow the rules of engagement and make every effort to neutralise insurgent groups through intelligence-based operations. He said they must not allow insurgents to vitiate the peaceful environment in Manipur. (PTI)
