Police fires tear shells on protesters

SRINAGAR, June 13: Police fired teargas shells and charged batons to disperse people, who were protesting against the Government order banning quarry in Mansbal area in Ganderbal.
The district administration has recently banned quarrying in tourist resort Manasbal area in Ganderbal district, leaving hundreds of families jobless.
Hundreds of people, mostly women blocked the main road, protesting against the banning of quarrying. Raising anti-Government slogans, the demonstrators claimed that they are working on these quarries for more than a century.
“We were rendered jobless and our children are facing starvation”, they said, adding let Government first make any alternative arrangement for our earning before banning the quarrying.
However, when the protestors refused to leave, police charged batons and burst teargas shells to disperse them.
Senior police and civil officials have rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators, who are demanding justice.
