Radio at the doorsteps

Sir,
This refers to the news item’RKJ organises poetic symposium, folk music concert’ (DE, June16,2015). It is heartening to read that Radio Kashmir Jammu organised a poetic symposium and folk music concert in Gojri language at Gandoh,  Block  Bhalessa, a remote area of Doda district. It is  noble initiative of Radio Kashmir Jammu to take Radio to the door steps of the audience and afford them an opportunity to interact with the writers, poets and artists.Gojri and Dogri languages have a literature of their own and they are spoken and understood by a vast majority of people especially in Jammu province but it is said that modern generation is losing charm for these languages and are switching over to other languages such as Hindi, English etc. Holding of such symposia and concerts at far away places serves twin purposes.
First, it acquaints and exposes the local people to the songs and literature of their own and affords them an opportunity to listen to their favourite artists, poets etc.
Secondly, it also provides the local artists a chance to perform and display their talent. It is expected that such events will be organised in farflung and remote areas and also in those areas which have made valuable contribution to Dogri or Gojri literature. There are many areas which are still not covered by Doordarshan and radio continues to act as a medium of entertainment and information about  what is going on in their country and the world.
Moreover, despite onslaught by TV and other gadgets radio still has a  mass appeal and  is still listened with interest in many parts of our state. RKJ deserves all appreciation for its noble initiative.
Yours etc….
Ashok Sharma,
