Man killed by rashly driven truck; people hold protest demonstration

JAMMU, June 30: The family members, relatives and friends of a man who was killed yesterday in a road accident at Bawe Talab on Jammu-Akhnoor Road, today staged a protest demonstration and blocked the National Highway at Mishriwala area of city outskirts.
About 200 people including family members and relatives and shopkeepers of Mishriwala, where the deceased man namely Surinder Kumar (33) son of Krishan Lal, a resident of Akhnoor, who used to run an electronic shop, assembled this morning with the body of the deceased at Mishriwala and held a strong protest and disrupted traffic movement for about two-three hours.
Alleging that the accident happened due to bad condition of road at Bawe Talab, the people raised slogans against the concerned department and demanded immediate repair of road, wherein wide and large potholes have erupted. The protesting people also demanded early start of work on four-laning Jammu-Akhnoor Road and adequate compensation for the family members of the deceased person.
On getting information, police officers including SDPO Domana, Surinder Sharma and SHO Kanachak, Inspector Rakesh Singh Jamwal and officers of civil administration including concerned Tehsildar reached the spot and pacified the protestors by assuring early repair of the road. After the assurance from the civil and police officers, the protestors lifted the dead body from the road and later performed its last rites.
A case of negligent driving had already been registered yesterday at police station Kanachak and the accused truck driver namely, Ajay Kumar son of Sri Ram, a resident of Pathankot, arrested. The truck had also been seized.
