Srinagar, June 30: A Kashmir University (KU) student held last week over his alleged militant links was released on bail today and the class work that remained suspended since last week will resume from tomorrow.
Hailing from Kakapora hamlet of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, Muzamil Farooq Dar, a third semester student of English Department in the varsity, was arrested by police from his rented accommodation in Hazratbal area on June 22.
Station House Officer of Rajbagh, Kuldeep Kumar, said they released Muzamil on bail.
A senior official of the KU attributed the release of Muzamil to “relentless efforts of varsity officials”.
Hundreds of students of the varsity last week boycotted their classes and protested against his arrest. They demanded release of their colleague.
On Thursday last week, the protests turned violent after University police allegedly opened fire in air to disperse the students outside Vice Chancellor’s office. Following the violent protests, the KU officials suspended the class work till June 30. The students in hostels were also directed to vacate them.
The class work in the KU, however, will resume from July 1, the Dean Academics, Prof Muhammad Ashraf Wani said.
