City police launches drive against erring two-wheelers, 4000 bikes seized

Srinagar, July 6: Traffic Police have launched a massive drive against erring two-wheelers for violating traffic rules in Srinagar and have seized 4, 000 mortorcycles in over a week.
The aggressive drive was started a week ago by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maqsood-ul-Zaman, who recently took over the charge of the department in the city.
The police have tightened the noose around those drivers who don’t wear helmets. Furthermore, the triple riders and rash drivers are also being fined by the cops with their two-wheelers often being seized.
Hundreds of seized two-wheelers, mostly bikes, are lying in different police stations and posts of the city.
City Traffic police chief, Maqsood-ul-Zaman, told Excelsior that the drive against motorcyclists would continue.
The Traffic police had requested petrol pump owners to deny fuel to those bikers who drive without helmets. When asked, the SSP said that though not all but most of them are cooperating with police. “…I have got a lot of response and most of them (petrol pump owners) are cooperating and are reporting to us. Things are improving. I am getting good response,” he said. He said around 3500 to 4000 bikes have been seized so far by police.
Appealing people to adhere to the traffic rules, he said that the on-going drive is for the safety of public. “I just want to tell the people that this is for your safety. A time will come when everyone of you would wear a helmet before driving a bike,” he said. He said that the drive shall continue in near future and won’t be concluded. “This is part of our duty,” he added.
Meanwhile, officials said that the drive against two-wheelers have been intensified to other parts of the Valley. They said that over the past few days, the police in southern and northern districts of the Valley have seized as well as fined scores of bikers for violating traffic norms.
