SRINAGAR, July 10: Several political parties including NC, PDP, Congress, CPI (M) and Hurriyat Conference have welcomed the resumption of Indo-Pakistan dialogue.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the resumption of Indo-Pak talks, hoping that the dialogue is sustained over the long term for results.
“Resumption of the Indo-Pak dialogue is a welcome development. I only hope that this time it is sustained over the long term for results,” Omar wrote on micro blogging site Twitter.
He said though Pakistan had not mentioned Kashmir, the issue would receive its due attention.
“We expect that in spite of Pakistan not mentioning Kashmir at all that the issue of Kashmir will receive its due attention going ahead,” Omar said.
PDP welcomed the decision to revive the stalled Indo-Pak dialogue process and expressed hope that the two countries will also carry forward the Jammu and Kashmir-specific confidence building measures.
“We warmly welcome the initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. We laud the efforts made by our Modi and also the bold response offered by his Pakistan counterpart,” senior PDP leader and Education Minister Naeem Akhter said.
Akhter said the development in the Russian city of Ufa was a vindication of the PDP’s view point which forms the basis of governance alliance with the BJP. He said his party was hopeful that the two countries will also take forward the Jammu and Kashmir-specific CBMs which have been stalled for many years.
Congress Party termed Modi – Sharief meet in Russia a welcome move. It said much has been said regarding Modi – Sharief meet that took place today in Russia, there were expectations that talks would lead to a major breakthrough and would be result oriented.
PCC Chief G A Mir said that Congress Party would welcome and support any move that would lead to complete peace on the borders and between the two Countries (India and Pakistan). He said the talks between Prime Minister and his counterpart Nawaz Sharief were expected to yield good results, holding of DG MO level talks, release of fishermen or SAARC summit etc are not new, as these were already in the UPA Govt’s agenda. He said Congress wants cordial atmosphere with neighbors; but at the same time won’t compromise on National integrity and sovereignty.
Terming the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Russia as a welcome step CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said these meetings need to be sustained and structured in the larger interests of peace in the Sub continent.
In a statement Tarigami observed that dialogue held in a casual approach has not yielded any results for the two countries in the past and now is the opportunity that both the countries need to move forward to address the looming uncertainty over the entire region. Tarigami urged India and Pakistan leadership to hold dialogue on all the bilateral issues including Kashmir.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman today welcomed the meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharief at Ufa in Russia and urged them to address the Kashmir issue.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in his sermon at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar stressed upon the need for a sustained dialogue process between the two countries to create favorable conditions for the resolution of all outstanding issues between the two including the core issue of Kashmir.
“People of Kashmir and Hurriyat have always supported the dialogue between the two countries so that it could foster cordial relations and encourage both nations to take necessary confidence building measures in order to move towards the resolution of the pending issues,” he said.
