Kamal highlights policies of NC

JAMMU, Aug 17: The 83rd birthday of former Minister and National Conference leader Pt. Govind Ram Sharma was celebrated today at his native village Miran Mandrian in Akhnoor tehsil.

A large number of Party leaders, activists and his well wishers attended the function. On the occasion the additional general secretary of NC and former Minister Sheikh Mustafa Kamal was the chief guest. The gathering prayed for long life of Mr Sharma.

Born on August 17, 1930 Mr Govind Ram was a great social worker and businessman. Inspired by National Conference founder leader Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah he joined the NC in 1948 and participated as a delegate in the first annual conference of the Party in Srinagar in 1949 and since then he was engaged in working for the upliftment of poor and downtrodden of the society especially the landless farmers and laborers. He tried his level best to get land reforms implemented in letter and spirit in the state despite facing a stiff opposition from landlords and jagirdars of Akhnoor area.

Addressing the function Dr Mustafa Kamal advised the political partner of the Party to give due consideration to NC functionaries in order to mitigate the sufferings of the masses.

He also highlighted the policies and programmes of the Party as well as its role while referring to the land reforms initiated by the Party in the state under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah.
