Srinagar, July 27: An awareness programme was held at Saint Paul’s International Academy School in Sonwar here by Drug De-addiction Centre of Police Control Roam (PCR) Srinagar.
A police spokesman said that the aim was to create awareness among the students regarding the drug addiction and to convey that drug addiction is a disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and needs to be treated as early as possible.
“The programme was followed by an interactive session. The students asked various questions. They wanted to know as to what type of drugs are mainly abused, their ill effects, signs & symptoms & how can we motivate somebody who is abusing drugs to quit,” the spokesman said.
The Police Drug De-addiction Center team addressed the issues & stigma attached to drug addiction & how to help the person who are involved in addiction.
Medical Officer, Dr Shabir-ul-Rehman, elaborated the medical ill effects of substance abuse and its medical management.
“The team of Counsellors which included Zahid Jeelani and Iram Wani elaborated the Psychological factors that are leading to substance abuse. They also elaborated on the role of counselling and motivational intervening. They emphasized to the students about how drug addiction can be handled and how to reach to Police Drug De-addiction Services,” the spokesman said.
Students were encouraged to call on help line number 0194-2450451 which is 24X7 service where a qualified counsellor is available to address the issues.
Social Worker, Manzoor Ahmad, elaborated on the role of families, role of society and religious leaders in controlling drug addiction and also elaborated on early identification of drug abuse and its treatment.
The police spokesman said that the the Programme was highly appreciated by the Principal of Saint Paul’s International Academy School Grace Paljor, who requested for further awareness programmes to be held at the school.
