Protest against water crisis in Rajouri, Kathua

JAMMU, Aug 18: Residents of Jawahar Nagar, Rajouri town held protest demonstration and disrupted traffic on Kalakote road while people from Barnoti area blocked Jammu-Pathankot National Highway near Kathua and disrupted movement of traffic in protest against the water crisis today.
Reports from Rajouri said that large number of people from Lower Jawahar Nagar area came out on the road at around 9.30 am today and held protest demonstration against the PHE authorities. A large number of women also joined the protest along with pots. They raised slogans against the PHE authorities and alleged that they have failed to ensure essential supply in the last 2-3 days.
Irate residents also raised barricades on Rajouri-Kalakote road and disrupted movement of traffic for about one and half hour. Later, PHE officials and police officials concerned reached the spot and assured the public for ensuring better water supply. The people then lifted dharna and suspended agitation.
Meanwhile, another report from Kathua said that a large number of people from Barnoti and adjoining areas came out on busy Jammu-Pathankot National Highway and  raised barricades at around 9 am. They disrupted the movement of traffic for about half an hour. They were protesting against the acute water shortage in the area due to failure of local pumping station. The people alleged that PHE Mechanical  wing Kathua failed to replace motor or get it repaired. They said that people were facing lot of hardships due to water shortage. Even the tanker supply has not been ensured, they maintained.
Later, with the intervention of Police the traffic was restored on the highway. The police assured to take up the matter with concerned PHE officers.
