JAMMU, Aug 2: “Increasing global changes are becoming inevitable and with that threat floods, landslides, earthquakes and avalanches are likely to increase. Jammu and Kashmir State being located on northern most part of the country and having varied climate is prone to such disasters. The State in fact has suffered such calamities and paid a heavy price for not having any advanced plan to tackle them. In the given condition having a State Disaster Management Plan (SDMP) is a welcome step”.
This was stated by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Hamid Choudhary here today who added that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s initiative towards approving the first-ever State Disaster Management Plan (SDMP) in the State will not only help people and Government to remain prepared for meeting any natural calamity but will also reduce our vulnerability to these hazards.
Choudhary Hamid said flash floods that affected Kashmir and other parts of the State, cloud bursts that wiped out villages in Doda and Leh besides earthquakes that jolted Bhaderwah and Kishtwar areas are grim reminders of staying prepared to more such natural disasters.
Since hamlets located on hills and several areas established close on the banks of rivers besides other cities and towns are all prone to such disasters there was a dire need of this first-ever State Disaster Management Plan (SDMP) that will surely work to identify and anticipate potential risks and also ensure continuity in critical operations post-incident. Now that SDMP has been framed it is hoped that adequate funds will be kept at its disposal besides adequate relief and rescue materials procured to deal with any situation, Choudhary Hamid said.
