NEW DELHI, Aug 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the casualties occurring in Manipur as a result of incessant rains and flash floods. He has ordered immediate relief and all possible help for the State.
Narendra Modi was responding to a deputation of Manipur State Unit of BJP which called on him today in the presence of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh who briefed the Prime Minister about the situation as well as the various steps taken by the Central Government and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) during the last three days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives as a result of flash floods and landslides during the last three days. He instructed Dr Jitendra Singh to keep in touch with the authorities in the Ministry of Home Affairs for effective follow up of relief and rehabilitation.
Later, Dr Jitendra Singh informed that the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had spoken to the Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh and had also issued instructions to union MoS for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju.
Pertinent to mention that about 20 people have been reported killed and over 25 houses reported to have been swept away by the flash floods in Zoumol Village in Khengjy Block, District Chandel located close to Myanmar border. Another three villages also have been reported to have been damaged as a result of landslides. In addition, several remote villages are totally cut off due to landslides and information about the situation there is not available. One student is also reported to have been killed due to flash floods in Churachandpur and nearly 25 villages in this area are presently cut off and inaccessible. Nearly 70% of the total area of the State of Manipur is affected by waterlogging and flash floods and large portions of Thaob, Bishnupur, Imphal West, Imphal East and Chandel are under water. Six bridges constructed on the Chakpi river were washed away by turbulent water in the Chandel District. Thousands have been rendered homeless and the agricultural crop including paddy has suffered huge damage.
The BJP State Unit delegation was led, among others, by State President and former Deputy Chief Minister Thakur Chaoba Singh, State General Secretary Asnik Kumar, Jaikishen and Thakur Biswajit, Ex.MLAs, M.G.Robert and K.Sarath Kumar.
